 Change is constant in the homegrown bouquets Suzanne Balet Haight sells at her market stall. The New York gardener and horticulturalist runs her own business, Balet Flowers & Design, and her success indicates her eye for beautiful flower combinations. She sells countless bundles and bouquets of flowers to eager customers from May through Octobe. Here are a few of her favorite no-fail gatherings for spring through fall.
Spring
- Pussy willow (Salix discolor), yellow tulips, and blue hyacinths. Dynamic yellow and blue flowers mixed with a touch of the fuzzies boldly herald the arrival of warmer days.
- Bridal wreath (Spiraea ‘Arguta’) and lilac (Syringa ¥ prestoniae ‘James McFarlane’). Soft and sweet, this white-and-purple duo is deliciously fragrant, too.
- Chinese forget-me-not (Cynoglossum amabile), yellow Heliopsis, and white feverfew (Matricaria parthenium). A petite blue, yellow, and white posy that will make you smile.
Summer - Mexican sunflower (Tithonia spp.), white cleome, and purple verbena. A sassy purple-and-orange combination mediated by oversize white flowers.
- Zinnia. Straight up and mixed in a rainbow
of hues, this pretty gathering epitomizes carefree days.
- Hot-pink zinnia, blue floss flower (Ageratum spp.), blue salvia, and white cosmos. A well-scaled bouquet boasting a fine blend of hot and cool colors.
Fall
- White oak (Quercus alba), red rose hips, white Chrysanthemum, Miscanthus, and green Amaranthus. Brilliant foliage and berries combine to tickle the senses.
- Burgundy Amaranthus, white ‘Pee Gee’ hydrangea, and ‘Flamingo Purple’ cockscomb (Celosia spicata). Try this trio for a splash of color you can carry into winter.
